puppy barking at people in hallway, how to train?

Question

My neighbour got a new puppy and it bark all the time when people walk in the hall. The owner ask me to help because I work from home and hear it all day. Is there a way to train a puppy to stop barking at strangers? How long it take usually?

Cho · Answer

Teaching a puppy to stay calm when people pass works best with a settle mat. Put the mat near the door, reward when the puppy lies down quietly while people walk. Start with the door closed and slowly open it. Most pups take 2-4 weeks, sometimes longer for alert breeds like shiba.

Puppy barking at hallway strangers is a normal stage. Ask the neighbour to take him out for quick walks so he gets used to people. Dont let him bark for long, when he barks stand still and wait for quiet.

ให้ลูกหมาเดินเข้าหาคนที่มาในทางเดินด้วยนะครับ ไม่ใช่ปล่อยให้เห่าอย่างเดียว ให้ขนมทุกครั้งที่มันเงียบ

I'd set up a camera so you can see when it barks and how often, then talk to the owner with facts. Remember a puppy under 6 months can't hold its bladder for long, so don't keep it in the hallway.

Pattama · Answer

Don't shout at the puppy, that makes it bark more. Also it's not really your job, maybe just ask the owner to try a dog trainer.

Some puppies bark because they are scared, not angry. Tell the owner to check the puppy body language first. Tail tucked means scared.
