Crate training: cruel or helpful? Our puppy cries all night

HW Hannah Wright 2 weeks ago 1,126

We bought a crate for our new puppy but he screams and barks at night. Friends say crates are cruel, others say they are the best thing ever. What was your experience and how did you make it a good place?

Done well, a crate is a den. Feed meals inside, toss treats in, and keep sessions short. Nighttime beside your bed at first so he hears you. Never use it as punishment. Give a chew toy inside to keep him busy, and leave the crate door open during the day so he can go in and out as he wishes.

Cover three sides with a blanket, add a warm-feeling blanket, and take him out to pee before bed. It took a week or two for ours to settle. If he cries, wait for a pause before letting him out, otherwise he learns that crying opens the door. Take him out for night-time toilet breaks.

In the heat, check the crate isn't in the sun or a hot spot. Never lock a dog in a hot place. A fan nearby and a cool mat help in the summer, and a crate that is too big can also make a dog feel less secure.
