crate training for puppy - my experience (long)

PSPattama Saetang14 May 2025·1 min read

I dont have dog now but last year i take care of puppy for my cousin for 2 months when they go to Bangkok for work. Puppy name Bella, 3 month old golden mix. Very cry at night. So I want to share what I learn.

First, dont use crate as punishment. Bella was scared at first when I put her inside with the door close. I put toy and some dog treat inside and leave door open. After 3 day she go in by herself and sleep.

Second, size matter. The crate must big enough to stand and turn around but not too big. Too big the puppy will pee in one corner. My cousin buy big crate from the shop in Surat and I need to change to smaller one with divider.

Third, timing. Take her out right after she wake up, after eating, and after playing. Very important for potty training. I count 15-20 min after meal and she go pee always.

Night time was hard. First week she cry 1-2 hour. I was very tired. I put the crate in my room near the bed so she can smell me. After 1 week she sleep 6 hour.

My neighbour say cover crate with blanket. Some people say yes some say no, I dont know, Bella like it so I do it. Ask your vet maybe.

Last one, do not give too much freedom at start. Bella chew cable and I have to buy new one 2 times lol.

Hope this help someone.

@Pattama thanks for sharing, I think the tip about the crate size is key. Bella is lucky.
