Taking my cat abroad for a job in Japan. Is it realistic?

I may move to Japan next year and my cat is very much part of the family. I've heard Japan is strict and takes months of preparation. Has anyone moved a pet out of Thailand to another country? What is the general process and cost, and is it fair to the cat?

It's realistic but it needs planning. Typically a microchip, rabies shots and blood test, waiting time, and official health certificates. Check the destination country's rules first, then your Thai vet will help with the export side. Also budget for the airline fee and the carrier, as well as vet visits on both ends, because costs add up quickly with an international move.

Ask an airline pet desk or a pet relocation agency to explain the steps. Compare the options, and ask your vet whether your cat's health suits air travel. Plan the timing carefully, since some tests are only valid for a few months, and a missed step can mean starting again, which is stressful.

My cousin moved her cat to Australia. It took most of a year, and costs were high, but the cat settled in well. Cats usually cope better with a quiet flight and a good carrier. Be sure to ask the destination country's embassy or pet authority directly, since they update their lists and requirements every now and then.
