rabbit basics from looking after my niece's bunny

ParkPark Ji-woo10 July 2026·1 min read

My niece went on holiday for a week and left her rabbit with us. Her name is Mochi, a dwarf rabbit, very shy. I never had a rabbit before and I have Max who is a Golden, so it was a bit strange for me to think small.

Here is what I learned in one week. Rabbits need hay all the time, not just vegetables. Hay is the most important food and it keeps the teeth from growing too long. Pellets only a small amount. Carrots are a treat, not a meal, and too much fruit gives them tummy problems.

The cage needs space to hop. Mochi kept running to the corner so I added a box to hide in. She feels safer that way. Also keep the rabbit away from dogs at first. Max was very curious and sniffed a lot, and Mochi thumped her back foot at him the whole time lol.

When she came back home my niece said the vet checks her teeth every 6 months. I didn't know that at all.

555 Mochi the rabbit is spoiled, my Namkhang cat would be so jealous. Hay all the time, got it.
