Misty tea-and-coffee village at about 1,300 m in Mae On, an hour or more from Chiang Mai; leashed dogs can stroll its lanes and many eateries let them in.
Dogs are welcome on a lead around the lanes, stream paths and many cafés of Mae Kampong.
Mae Kampong Village is an old Lanna community in a forested valley at about 1,300 m, some 50 km northeast of Chiang Mai. Wooden houses, cafés and homestays line a lane beside a rushing stream; at its end the small Wat Khantha Pruksa sits on an islet in the river, and Mae Kampong Waterfall is close by. November to February brings cool air and morning mist.
The cool air makes this an easy day out with a dog. One dog owner found every shop they visited let their dog in, including Khao Soi Kloi Jai and Baan Ing Dao café. Shady spots line the stream and waterfall path. From noon the lane gets crowded and parking is hard, so arrive by about 9–10 am.
Good to know: the village is free to enter; the waterfall charges a small fee. There's no fuel station in the village, so fill up in San Kamphaeng or Mae On before the climb.
From Chiang Mai drive via San Kamphaeng and Mae On to Huai Kaeo, about 1–1.5 hours; the last stretch is a steep, winding mountain road. The Mae Kampong minivan from Warorot Market (200 THB, book ahead) accepts small dogs in a carrier. Grab or a taxi costs around 700–1,200 THB.
