Description
Ban Bang Niew Dam Reservoir (Bang Neaw or Bang Niao Dam) is a quieter alternative to Bang Wad, inland from Cherngtalay and Kamala in the Ma Nik area. A narrow paved road loops roughly 5.5 km around the green water through forest and rubber plantations, with about 115 m of up and down; a lap takes about an hour. November to May is the best season.
Dog walkers are a regular sight here in the early morning and late afternoon. Much of the loop is shaded but some stretches are open, so avoid midday. Traffic is light, but the road has no shoulder, so keep your dog on a lead. Expect stray dogs, snakes, monitor lizards and mosquitoes. Banks can be steep and slippery, so skip swimming.
Good to know: it's open around the clock and busiest around 5pm. Parking is free, with toilets and an outdoor gym. The road on the north side of the dam is gated.
