Short but steep jungle climb to Pa Hin Dum (Black Rock) above Nai Harn in south Phuket; dogs are fine on a lead, but go early as the windy top has no shade.
Bringing your pet
Dogs are welcome on a lead on the short jungle path up to Black Rock Viewpoint (Pet Friendly Phuket).
- Terrain: The 10–20 minute climb from the Pa Hin Dum rock is steep with loose soil and rocks; the 6 km Nai Harn loop adds a rope section most dogs can't manage.
- Heat & water: The windy top has no shade, toilets or water, so carry plenty and skip midday.
- Animals on site: On the Nai Harn loop two dogs at a gate chased hikers away, so take the path around it.
- Entry & fees: Free and open all day; the 1 km dirt road in turns muddy from July to October.
Description
Black Rock Viewpoint (Pa Hin Dum) is a rocky hilltop between Karon Viewpoint and Nai Harn, looking over Nai Harn and Ya Nui beaches, Promthep Cape and the islands. From the parking spot it's a 10–20 minute climb through jungle; a harder 6 km loop from Nai Harn adds scrambles and a rope section. Come at sunrise or late afternoon.
With a dog, take the short path: steep, with loose soil and rocks, but fine for a fit dog. The windy top has no shade, toilets or water, so carry plenty and skip midday. On the Nai Harn loop, hikers met two territorial dogs at a gate, and the rope climb is beyond most dogs. Mosquitoes are thick in the forest.
Good to know: entry is free and open all day. The 1 km dirt road suits a scooter or 4x4; a local shuttle (reported 200 THB per person) runs from the main road. Expect mud from July to October.
