Description
Chalong Dam (Khlong Katha Reservoir), completed in 2017, is a reservoir above Chalong used by walkers, runners and cyclists. The main loop is about 4.3 km with 137 m of climbing, mostly paved with some rocky parts, and takes just over an hour. Fit hikers can add the 5.7 km Tinman forest loop or a hard 12.9 km route to the Big Buddha. Sunrise is the favourite time.
Locals walk dogs here, and the paved sections are easy on paws early in the day. There isn't much shade on the main loop, so avoid midday and carry water. Stray dog packs are reported, and elephants from a park next to the trails may be near, so keep your dog leashed. The forest loops are steep and rocky, better for fit dogs; November to June is driest.
Good to know: entry is free and there's street parking by the dam. Take an offline map for the forest trails.
