Bringing your pet
Dogs aren't confirmed here as we found no pet rule for this forest trail between Kata, Karon and the Big Buddha, a temple site where you should check before entering.
- Where dogs can't go: Kata and Karon beaches below officially prohibit dogs during the day (Phuket Community).
- Terrain: Long, steep hills, rocky ground and landslide damage; on routes from Kata, fixed ropes on the steepest stretches stop many dogs.
- Heat & water: Road sections heat up fast, so start early and carry plenty of water.
- Animals on site: Local dogs live along the way, so keep yours close.
Description
Kata-Karon Hiking Trail climbs from the hills behind Kata and Karon through forest towards the Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill. It's about 1.6 to 4.6 km depending on the start, mixing quiet roads and jungle path, and takes 2 to 3 hours, with views over Kata and Karon beaches. Start early to beat the heat, and avoid July to October, when rain washes out sections.
With a dog, expect a real hike: long, steep hills, rocky ground and parts damaged by landslides. On routes from Kata, some stretches are so steep and narrow that ropes are fixed for hikers, which many dogs can't manage. Road sections heat up fast, so carry plenty of water. Local dogs live along the way, so keep yours close. Be back down before dark.
Good to know: the Big Buddha has no entrance fee, but it's a temple site with a modest dress code. Download the route on AllTrails or Wikiloc first.
