Phuket's southern tip in Rawai, a grassy headland with a lighthouse, shrine and the island's best-known sunset view; dogs are welcome on a lead, but sunset brings crowds.
Bringing your pet
Dogs are welcome on a lead on the open headland and terrace at Promthep Cape (Pet Friendly Phuket).
- Safety: Keep well back from the rocks at the tip, where a wave swept two tourists into the sea in May 2023.
- Heat & water: The headland is exposed, so bring water, avoid midday and allow for the tiring walk back up from the tip.
- Crowds: Around sunset hundreds of people line the wall, which many dogs find stressful; a daytime visit is calmer.
- Entry & fees: Entry and parking are free, and the cape is open at all hours.
Description
Promthep Cape (Laem Phromthep) is the southernmost point of Phuket: a sloping headland of grass and rock running out from a viewing terrace, the white Kanchanaphisek Lighthouse and a Brahma shrine with elephant figures. You look out over the Ko Kaeo islands and Nai Harn Bay. Sunset falls between about 18:05 and 18:50 through the year, and a path leads down to the palm-topped tip.
The terrace is a short walk from the car park, but around sunset hundreds of people line the wall, which many dogs find stressful; a daytime visit is calmer. The headland is exposed, so bring water and avoid midday. The walk back up from the tip is tiring. Keep well back from the rocks at the tip: in May 2023 a wave swept two tourists into the sea.
Good to know: entry and parking are free, and the cape is open at all hours. November to April has the clearest skies.
