Description
Khao Ra Lookout Trail climbs Khao Ra, at 627 m the highest point on Koh Phangan. From Khao Ra Bungalows in the island's centre, a wide dirt track narrows into a marked forest path that stays steep nearly all the way: about 6.4 km return with almost 600 m of climbing, roughly 2 hours up and 1 down. Lookouts at the top face north and south.
Most of the hike is under trees, but the steady climb over roots and loose small rocks is hard work in the humidity; only fit dogs used to long hikes should come. Hikers advise about 3 litres of water each, so carry extra for your dog. Reviewers mention snakes and overgrown sections, and it turns slippery after rain.
Good to know: the trailhead is on private land with a small sign-in fee (reported 20–100 THB). Start early for clearer views, don't hike alone, and avoid the October–December monsoon.
