Description
Khao Ta Luang is a 342 m forested peak in the north of Koh Phangan, between Chaloklum and the Moo 7 area. A route crosses it from north to south: about 7.7 km point to point with roughly 410 m of climbing, rated moderate, taking around 3 hours. It runs along the coast, through forest and out onto local roads, and you are unlikely to meet many people. January to May is the best time.
This is a long, humid walk for a dog, with roots, rocks, steady climbs and full sun on the coastal and road stretches. Carry plenty of water and a bowl, start early and turn back if your dog flags in the heat. Mosquitoes are common, so check for ticks afterwards.
Good to know: the forest is part of Than Sadet–Ko Pha-ngan National Park. From October to December, monsoon rain can wash out sections and bring down branches, so skip it then.
