I walk early in the morning along the beach road in Lipa Noi and always a few dogs bark at me, some even run toward me. I am not scared but it is annoying, and my niece is getting scared too when she come with me. Does it mean they are guard dogs or something else? How do I make them stop?

Dogs bark when they feel their territory is threatened. Stand still and turn sideways, don't turn your back, let them sniff your hand low. If they chase, stop walking, dont run, and wait until the owner calls them back. Many street dogs are used to people feeding them, so dont bring anything smelling like food. A stick or umbrella is ok to have but do not hit. Hope it help your niece too.
I think a lot of dog barks cuz they learn it is fun. Ignore is best, dont give them attention even if you scared, and never run.
Maybe because you wear bright color or you move fast? Many dog think running is chasing. Walk slow, dont look straight at them, very helpful. Also carry some treat in pocket just in case.
+1 Xu Ming, walking slow works for me with Baby but the Shih Tzu sometimes bark too. The dog near my soi always pulled by owner, so they bark when chain stop them. Very annoying sometimes.
I had the same problem near my soi. What helped was just keeping on walking and not stopping, dogs get bored quickly. If the dog belongs to someone nearby, ask the owner to keep it on a leash in the morning, most people are happy to.
I think it could be the rainy season, dogs get more aggressive when they are wet and cold in the morning? Not sure. Maybe the dogs are just bored.
