Dogs are allowed inside the cave only while carried in arms or in a pet bag or carrier. They may not walk on the ground inside the cave temple. Pup Cities and Pantip visitor reviews say staff enforce this rule, which in practice limits visits to small dogs.
There is no pet fee, and there are no pet facilities, dog runs or waste stations. The paths outside have wild macaques that can startle or attack pets, so keep dogs held close and off the ground. Confirm the rules with staff at the entrance, as they can change.
Please follow the rules, be polite and considerate, and do not leave pets unattended unless you have agreed this in advance with the staff.
Tham Khao Luang is a Buddhist pilgrimage site on Khao Luang hill, with a natural skylight in the cave roof. Daylight beams down onto dozens of centuries-old Buddha statues and a large reclining Buddha. The best time to see the light is in the morning, roughly 9:00 to 11:30.
The cave has multi-room chambers, stalactites and historic shrines dating from the reigns of Rama IV and Rama V. Visitors should dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before entering any building with a Buddha image.
Small stalls at the base area sell snacks, water and souvenirs, and there are no restaurants inside the cave. The site suits visitors interested in history, religion and nature, but it is not a pet venue.
Tham Khao Luang is in Thongchai subdistrict, Mueang Phetchaburi District, about 130 km southwest of Bangkok. Take Highway 4 (Phetkasem Road) into Phetchaburi city centre.
There are no BTS or MRT stations nearby. The nearest train station is Phetchaburi Railway Station, from which you can hire a songthaew or tuk-tuk. Park at the base car park near Wat Bunthawi (Wat Tham Klaeb) and take the local shuttle truck up to the cave steps.
