I am 73 and my dog Onigiri has lots of mats behind her ears and under her belly. I cannot brush them out, she cries and my hands hurt too. Groomers near me charge a lot, almost 1500 baht every time for a shave. Is there another way? I do not want to shave her completely.

Mats are easier to fix when they are still small, so brush her once a week with a slicker brush and a detangler spray. If the mats are tight, ask a groomer to only take out those spots instead of a full shave. Some groomers charge by the hour and it can be cheaper. If she gets matted often, a cheap clipper for yourself might be worth it.
Poodles are not the only ones who mat, but yes it happens a lot. For tight mats near the skin I put a little coconut oil on them and wait 10 min before combing. Ask the vet if the skin is red under the mat. Onigiri may also need her nails trimmed, long nails make her walk weird and that adds stress.
Ask the groomer for a bathing and brushing package, its cheeper than a full shave. Or ask a friend to help you, cut in the morning when dog is sleepy.
I think mats come from not brushing enough. You must brush hard and fast, she will be ok. Dont use scissors, I cut my cat badly once lol. Also wash less or the hair gets knot more.
