Ping is a mixed cat with long fur on his back, and mats are forming behind the ears and under his legs. Every time I try to brush him he bites and runs away. Should I cut the mats myself or take him to a groomer? I am afraid of hurting his skin.
Don't cut mats with scissor, super easy to cut skin, I did it once to my corgi. Use detangler spray and a mat splitter. Or go to groomer for shaving, is not bad. Start with 5 min sessions and treat after. My Pomeranian was the same at first.
Same question for my flatmate's cat. Honestly a groomer might be the safest, especially for mats near the skin. Ask your vet as well, sometimes cats are stressed and they can give something calming for the visit.
Maybe cat is in pain when you brush? Check if skin is red, he might has skin problem. Vet first, before groomer.
Mats near the legs very very painful sometimes. For the knots use a comb not brush, and dont pull hard. Maybe cut only the very big ones with blunt tip scissors from the side. My cat was fine after 3 days.
My Shiba is hard too. I use treat on the brush, and only brush 2 min, then stop. Cats hate being held, so do it on the sofa with him sitting on your lap, not standing. It takes time, don't rush it.
