Rocky lookout over Shark Bay and Chalok Baan Kao at Koh Tao's southern tip, a short rope-assisted scramble from Freedom Beach; leashed dogs are allowed.

Bringing your pet

Dogs are welcome on a lead on the short trail from Freedom Beach to John-Suwan Viewpoint (AllTrails, Wongnai).

  • Terrain: The 500 m path ends in a rocky climb with ropes, so carry a small dog or stop below the top with a larger one.
  • Safety: The descent is riskiest, especially after rain, and the summit holds only about ten people.
  • Heat & water: It gets very hot with no facilities, so bring water.
  • Animals on site: Local dogs often follow hikers up and down the trail.
  • Entry & fees: A cash fee of 50–100 THB covers the viewpoint, Freedom Beach and Taa Toh beach.

Description

John-Suwan Viewpoint is a pile of granite boulders on Laem Ta Toh, Koh Tao's southern headland, named after landowner Suwan and his friend John. The top looks over Chalok Baan Kao Bay on one side and Shark Bay on the other. The trail from Freedom Beach is only about 500 m, 15–30 minutes, but ends in a rocky climb with ropes. Sunrise is quietest.

Dogs are allowed on a leash, and Thai hikers report local dogs following visitors up. The rope sections still defeat many dogs: small ones need carrying, larger ones a confident handler. The descent is riskiest, especially after rain, and the summit holds only about ten people. It gets very hot with no facilities, so bring water.

Good to know: a cash fee, reported at 50–100 THB, covers the viewpoint, Freedom Beach and Taa Toh beach; collectors are there from about 9 am. January to May is driest.

Getting there

From Sairee or Mae Haad, ride south on the main road through Chalok Baan Kao, about 15 minutes by scooter, following signs for Freedom Beach. Park at the Freedom Beach car park, follow the 'Viewpoint' sign up the dirt road to the left past the fee booth, then hike the rocky trail to the top. Koh Tao has no public transport; taxis are the alternative.
