Bringing your pet
Dogs are welcome on a lead along the streamside path at Than Prawet Waterfall in Than Sadet–Ko Pha-ngan National Park.
- Terrain: The rough path means boulder scrambles that get slippery when wet, so check paws for cuts.
- Safety: Watch for litter and glass at the lower falls.
- Swimming: Upstream pools are cleaner for a dip; in the dry season the water can be low or brown.
- Entry & fees: One visitor reported a 100 baht fee; keep your park ticket on you.
Description
Than Prawet Waterfall is not one big drop but a chain of chutes and small cascades running for several kilometres down a rocky riverbed above Thong Nai Pan Noi, on Koh Phangan's northeast coast. It is one of the waterfalls named by King Rama V, whose initials are carved on a nearby rock. Upstream, the pools are cleaner and the scenery better than at the lower falls. After the rains is best; in the dry season it can be low or brown.
The forest is shady and the stream has places to cool off, but the path is rough and rocky and gets slippery when wet, so expect your dog to scramble over boulders. Watch for litter and glass at the lower falls.
Good to know: the falls are part of Than Sadet–Ko Pha-ngan National Park, and one visitor reported a 100 baht fee. Keep your ticket on you.
Getting there
Head for Thong Nai Pan Noi on the northeast coast. The hilly road there is steep and not for beginner scooter riders, so take a songthaew or taxi if you're unsure. The falls are just inland from the village, with several entrances along the road to the gate. One review says an entrance is next to a tattoo studio.
