Description
Yang Na Yai Tree is a giant Dipterocarpus alatus near Wat Pho in Ban Tai, measured in 2013 at 53.5 metres tall with a 14.64-metre girth and put by forestry officials at around 400 years old. Villagers treat it as sacred, with small shrines at its foot, coloured ribbons round the trunk and a sign reading 'Biggest Yang Na'. It is a quick roadside stop; step well back to fit the crown in a photo.
It is an easy outing with a dog: a short, flat walk on a quiet road. Keep the lead on, keep your dog away from the offerings at the base and watch for scooters. Thai sources note that bees nest in the tree in large numbers, so don't linger under it if they are active. Come early or late to avoid the midday heat.
Good to know: the tree is free to visit and accessible at any hour. January to May is the driest period; heavy rain from October to December can make island roads slippery.
Getting there
From the Ban Tai road between Thong Sala and Haad Rin, turn inland onto the road to Thong Nai Pan by Wat Pho; the tree is about 700 metres from the turn, with a sign. It is about 8 minutes by car from Thong Sala pier, or about 6.6 km from Haad Rin over steep hills and sharp bends, so ride carefully. Songthaews and shared taxis run along the Ban Tai road.
